Whisking someone special away for a romantic weekend? You’ll fall hard for these locations

3 min read

If you really cared, you’d have booked somewhere already. JK! It’s actually the perfect time to start thinking about a Valentine’s Day trip - especially if you want to surprise a certain someone. We’ve picked out some super romantic places, whether you want to treat a lover, your BBF, or yourself this Valentine’s Day. Because if you can’t love yourself, as Ru Paul famously says, how in the hell you gonna love someone else?

The two of us

If you want to avoid the crowds (and endless tables of whispering couples) this Valentine’s Day then consider somewhere off the beaten track. Head to the Tuscan hills for long walks, stunning photo opportunities and delicious local dishes. Tuscans pride themselves on their ‘zero kilometre’ food, where every ingredient is locally sourced - perfect for a Lady and The Tramp spaghetti moment. Lunigiana is a particularly pretty area of Tuscany, and only an hour from Pisa airport.

For a truly unique Valentine’s Day with just your sweetie, book into the Alpeniglu village in Tyrol. Based inside the huge ski resort SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser, this is Austria’s only igloo village - with a hotel, bar and ever-changing sculptures all made out of ice. The perfect excuse to cuddle up together with some gluhwein and good conversation.

Sex in the city

Did you know that St Valentine is buried in Dublin? If you’re looking for a romantic city break that’s also good for a craic you can’t go wrong with the Dubs. It’s packed full of cosy pubs (avoid the Guiness tour - it’ll be stag do central) and close enough to the countryside for loads of outdoor adventures made for two. Book a falconry lesson, a horseback ride or even a kayaking trip - and then warm up at literary pub Davy Byrnes with a pint of the black stuff and some fresh oysters. They’re an aphrodisiac, don’t you know!

If Paris feels like a bit of a basic idea for a romantic weekend away, maybe it’s time to disappear off to eastern Europe. Prague has big city glamour as well as many, many candlelit restaurants serving up warming Czech comfort food. A walk across the Charles bridge is a perfect opportunity for a smug couples selfie before you disappear underground into one of Prague’s famous cellar bars (we really rate U Staré Studny).

Just friends

If you’re single and keen to avoid Valentine’s Day fever, it’s the perfect excuse to grab your bestie and jet off somewhere new for the weekend. Dubrovnik out of the main holiday season is still a charming city break destination - and you might even catch a little Mediterranean sun. Head to the city walls for incredible views of the coast (and thirst trap photos) before treating yourself to a unique piece of jewellery in one of the many independent boutiques.

Looking for something more lively? Istanbul is a lot of fun in February - full of glittering drinking dens, an embarrassment of meze restaurants and stunning views across the river as the sun goes down. Book a trip on the Bosphorus ferry and soak up the atmosphere after you’ve picked up some bargains in the Grand Bazaar. We hear the Kadıköy-Moda neighbourhood is a hotspot of cool cafes and live music venues. Who knows, you might even meet next year’s Valentine while you’re there.
