Giving back when travelling

Be the change you want to see in the world!

8 min read

Here at BeRightBack Travel, we understand that travelling the world can be about more than just fun. While it can be very personally rewarding, we can also take part in acts and services that make our world a better, more ethical and aware place. Travel is able to open our eyes to not only other cultures but other ways of perceiving the world. It can help us wake up to the plight of our planet and humanity, and to recognize that there is more that unites us than divides us.

With our subscription travel, we always want to make sure you're having a great time. However, we also want to encourage all travellers to do some good while abroad. With this in mind, we wanted to put together this guide to aid you in understanding how, why and what you can do to give back while on your adventures.

Volunteer Some Time in Organic Growing

Food security, or lack thereof, remains a major concern in our world today. So, what can we do to help move the world towards zero hunger? If you, like us, consider it unacceptable that so many in the world go hungry – volunteering could be an excellent option for you. Think tending to sheep in Ireland, learning about horticulture in Africa or growing cashew nuts in Cambodia. Many around the world are just as passionate about truly sustainable, organic food production and we can provide ourselves with the opportunity to contribute in some way to this trend. Along with your adventures while abroad, you could consider spending time in organic growing and learn special skills you can bring home.

Keep your eyes peeled for community projects, communal gardens or organic farmers in the areas you are visiting. Along with giving back by growing, the valuable skills you can learn will help you live more sustainably, helping create a better world.

Sustainable Construction Projects

If gardening isn’t really up to your ally, you can always get involved in a range of other sustainable projects. For instance, sustainable building projects. This allows you to help construct homes or other buildings to enhance the communities you pass through, get involved in generating renewable power to communities in need, or lend a helping hand on sustainable infrastructure projects. Anything you can involve yourself in to move our world in a promising direction.

Take Part in a Beach Clean or Litter Picking Initiative

A critical issue in the world that we don’t often talk about is the massive amount of waste in our waters which inevitably, end up on our beaches. When a majority of our vacation time is spent on the beach, the least we can do is carry out our part in preventing, keeping or helping in waste management. There are plenty of things we can do to enjoy a low or even zero-waste vacation, but while we try to cut off the source, we can also help clean up.

Wherever you go, you can get involved in beach cleans or other litter picking initiatives. If you happen to be in an area that doesn’t take on these initiatives, don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty yourself. Take action and pick up litter where you go. A little bit goes a long way!

Get Involved With Conservation or Rewilding

Another interesting way to do good and give back when travelling is to get involved with conservation or rewilding projects. Conservation projects are run by organizations looking to protect their countries surroundings which include its biodiversity, wildlife and wild places, as well as endangered species. On the same note, a rewilding project, while also a form of conversation, looks to introduce lost animals species to natural environments. This allows for an increase in biodiversity, promotes environments that are self-sustainable and can even alleviate climate change.

There is an extensive range of amazing projects around the world seeking to halt devastating biodiversity loss. Ecosystems around the world are suffering due to humanity. But humanity also plays a role in preserving and protecting those ecosystems, and should also play a role in ecosystem restoration. So how exactly can you help? Look at local zoos for conservation and research programs. You may even find a wildlife rehab centre you can be a part of. Don’t be afraid to head online and check out where and how you can help across the world. Donations are always welcome as well!

Be Part of a Citizen Science Bio-Blitz

To help make the world better, it would help if we had an understanding of the world to begin with. Scientists around the world are achieving great things and cataloguing our planets amazing variety of life to be able to understand how and why things are changing.

Therefore getting involved in a bio-blitz is a tremendous way to encourage us to comprehend what exactly is around us and how to identify a solution to help. Essentially, a bio-blitz (also known as a biological inventory or biological census) is an event that concentrations on identifying any species that can be found in an area over a short period. The reason for doing this is to have a final count of all the plants, animals, fungi and organisms found in that area at the time. A learning curve that could benefit you immensely in your daily life.

Being a part of something bigger than yourself will always be incredibly rewarding. Especially when we are in a position of being able to enter other countries and enjoy their surroundings. We need to care about these areas because if they are consistently used and abused, they will disappear. Taking care of our planet is so important, and with all of these ways you can help, you can leave your vacation knowing you were able to provide a positive impact. A life lesson just as important as travelling.
